New Renault F1 boss Cyril Abiteboul says that the French company is well advanced with the 2015 version of its power unit, which like those of the other manufacturers has had to be developed in line with the FIA’s homologation rules.

“The engine world is not exactly the same as the chassis world,” he said on Friday. “In the sense that with the homologation you are not free to develop the engine, and therefore what we can do this year is fairly limited. What we need to focus on right now is to get reliability sorted out, because clearly what we are delivering on track is not acceptable for some of our customers. We need to fix that, clearly; this is for this season and see what can be done from a performance perspective.

The deal for Lotus to use Mercedes power units from 2015 will be confirmed in the next few days. At one stage an announcement was scheduled for yesterday, but it could now come at the start of next week.

The new arrangement sees Lotus take over the supply made available by McLaren’s move to Honda next season.

Rumors to the effect that Renault could be planning to sell its F1 engine department in Viry come at exactly the same time as suggestions that Red Bull wants to do its own thing on the power unit front – and it’s not hard to tie the two together.

Logic suggests that rather than attempt to start its own engine operation from scratch, Red Bull could take over Viry and introduce its own systems and key personnel in an attempt to improve the situation. It’s worth noting that Dr Helmut Marko has been spending a lot of time there recently.

Lotus could be set to switch from Renault to Mercedes power in 2015, well-placed sources have confirmed.

Inevitably there has been some tension between Renault and Lotus this season. Lotus has been late with payments to the French manufacturer over the past couple of seasons, while the reliability and performance problems associated with the power unit have proved frustrating to the team.

Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner has made clear his frustration at Renault by insisting that the French manufacturer has to change the way it does things.

His comments came after Sebastian Vettel’s Austrian GP was ruined by an early glitch that put him a lap down.
