IndyCar: Carpenter Wins Indy 500 Pole, Busch Qualifies 12th

Ed Carpenter won the Indianapolis 500 pole for the second straight year, posting a four-lap average of 231.067 mph.

He was the last of the nine fastest qualifiers to hit the track Sunday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He knocked off James Hinchcliffe on the last lap to start first on the May 25 race.

Hinchcliffe starts second a week after his concussion in the Grand Prix of Indianapolis. Will Power joins them on the front row.

In his 299th Grand Prix appearance Valentino Rossi led the Le Mans race for several laps and secured his 150th premier-class podium in second place.

Rossi pushed hard from the start of the fifth race of the year, getting into the lead in the early stages from fifth on the grid, capitalizing on a mistake from eventual race winner Marc Marquez.

Lotus team owner Gerard Lopez has hit out at Renault after the F1 engine supplier revealed some of its customers are behind in payments.

Although Renault chief Jean-Michel Jalinier’s comments in Barcelona also triggered rumors about the future of Caterham, suspicion also fell on Lotus, who last year were famously late to pay Kimi Raikkonen.

Marc Marquez of Spain pulled off a remarkable comeback at the French Grand Prix on Sunday to earn his fifth win in as many MotoGP races this season.

Marquez slipped to 10th place on the opening lap despite taking pole position on Saturday, but the reigning world champion quickly made up ground on the Bugatti track and overtook Valentino Rossi of Italy on the 13th lap before pulling away.

When Ed Carpenter, Carlos Munoz and Helio Castroneves were pushed to the edge Saturday, each remained calm and came up with their best-qualifying runs of the day.

Now they have to do it again one more time Sunday.

The American, Colombian and Brazilian who have celebrated some of their biggest career moments at Indianapolis each made daring runs over the final 80 minutes Saturday to take the top three seeds heading into Sunday’s Indianapolis 500 shootout. Carpenter finished first with a four-lap qualifying average of 230.661 mph. Munoz was second at 230.460.
