Toyota has shown that it may be the team to beat this year at Le Mans, as the Japanese manufacturer led the way in Sunday’s official test day for the 24-hour endurance classic.

Pitted against fellow LMP1 factory efforts from Audi and newcomers Porsche, it was the No. 8 Toyota TS040 Hybrid of Sebastien Buemi that was quickest. The Swiss driver reeled off a best lap of 3:23.014, set early in the four-hour afternoon session.

Takuma Sato has earned the pole position for Sunday’s second race of the Detroit Grand Prix.

Sato’s final lap in the second of two qualifying sessions knocked Helio Castroneves out of the top spot. Castroneves, who won the pole and finished fifth in Saturday’s first race, will start third under the IndyCar series qualifying rules.

There he stood in the Target/Chip Ganassi area of the paddock at Belle Isle resplendent in his Scottish plaid beret, a blue sport coat and tan slacks talking with team personnel on Saturday morning hours before the Verizon IndyCar Series Chevrolet Indy Dual in Detroit.

It was one of the greats in auto racing history, three-time Formula 1 World Champion Sir Jackie Stewart.

An intriguing duel between Marc Marquez and Jorge Lorenzo saw the former come out on top at Mugello, with Valentino Rossi joining them on the podium.

The two Spaniards put on a great show in front of the Italian crowd, battling for the lead for several laps, only for Marquez to clinch a sixth successive victory in 2014 by 0.121s on the final lap.

But despite the gains from recent engine development a home victory is appears out of the reach of Desmosedici riders Cal Cructhlow and Andrea Dovizioso.
