Will Power gave Roger Penske and Chevrolet what they desperately wanted by winning the first of two races at the Detroit Grand Prix.

“On his home track and in Chevy’s backyard, it’s a perfect day,” Power said Saturday. “If we can do it again tomorrow, it’ll be even better.”

Power finished 0.3308 seconds ahead of Graham Rahal on the bumpy, 13-turn, 2.36-mile street circuit on Belle Isle.

Two giants of world motorsport came together at the Mugello Circuit when Marc Marquez and Fernando Alonso got together on the eve of Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix.

The two Spanish stars met in Marquez’s Repsol Honda garage after he claimed pole position for the 23 lap race, his sixth consecutive pole this season.

Marquez, 21 and the youngest ever MotoGP World Champion, later revealed that one day he would like to try an F1 car but not in a race.

Helio Castroneves has won the pole for the first race of the Detroit Grand Prix doubleheader.

The Brazilian heads into Saturday afternoon’s race coming off a close runner-up finish to Ryan Hunter-Reay in the Indianapolis 500. Castroneves has two victories at Belle Isle, including the first win of his career, in 2000.

Having taken MotoGP pole at the Gran Premio d’Italia TIM on Saturday afternoon, Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) heads the grid again for Sunday’s sixth race of the year, with Andrea Iannone (Pramac Racing) and Jorge Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) also featured on the front row.

A 1:47.270 lap gave Marquez his sixth consecutive pole this year and his seventh successive top grid spot including Valencia last year, as his perfect form continued.

Richard Westbrook saved the best for last, as the Spirit of Daytona driver claimed a crucial pole position for Saturday’s Chevrolet Sports Car Classic.

Westbrook took his No. 90 Corvette DP to the top spot with less than three minutes on the clock, but it looked like he was beaten when the No. 1 Extreme Speed Motorsports HPD ARX-03b of Ryan Dalziel posted a 1:25.029 in the dying stages of the heated 15-minute session.
