put the disappointment of his early retirement in Malaysia behind him with a superb victory in China.

Alonso didn’t put a foot wrong, keeping his tires alive better than most of his rivals and finding consistent pace.

“Definitely it was nearly a perfect Sunday for us, with not any problem in the race,” said Alonso. “The start was clean, it was good. We managed to overtake Kimi Raikkonen. And then in the first stint we managed to pass Lewis Hamilton as well. The car felt a little bit better on the degradation side, let’s say. And then in the rest of the race, obviously you need to take care of the tires a little bit, you need to manage the gap with the guys behind.”

2012 Series champion Ryan Hunter-Reay led from pole at Barber, led the most laps and scored a gritty win over Scott Dixon and Helio Castroneves.

The Andretti Autosport team claimed their second consecutive victory to open the 2013 season as RHR used his Chevy power to streak away during the first third of the race and came back to pass Team Penske’s Helio Castroneves–which included a NASCAR-style donut from contact with the Brazilian–to take back the lead which he held to the finish.

RACE RECAP

The opening race of the 2013 IZOD IndyCar Season started off on the streets of St. Petersburg with polesitter Will Power putting his traditional mark on the field.

The Aussie led away from the start, pulling out an 11-second lead by Lap 18, but then things started to get very, very interesting.

A crash on cold tires by Dario Franchitti on Lap 19 brought out the first caution of the day, and when the race resumed on Lap 32, Power’s Team Penske teammate Helio Castroneves–the defending race winner–served notice he wasn’t going down without a fight.

Three-time defending champion held off Red Bull teammate Mark Webber in a scintillating battle to win the Malaysian Grand Prix on Sunday, with the German later apologizing for ignoring team instructions late in the race.

Vettel, who had earlier complained to the team about Webber’s slow pace, battled the Australian for much of the day, with the cars almost touching as the German grabbed the lead on the 46th lap for his 27th victory, which matches the total of three-time champion Jackie Stewart. The German now leads Lotus driver Kimi Raiikonen by nine points in the championship.
