Valentino Rossi believes that he must improve his qualifying performance if he is to be the first rider to beat Marc Marquez this season.

The next chance for the seven-time MotoGP World Champion comes in Sunday’s Catalunya Grand Prix at Rossi’s beloved Barcelona circuit.

Rossi has been second to the all-conquering Spanish youngster Marquez three times this season but harbors thoughts of reprising his glory days at the 2.93-mile circuit.

Toyota will start the 82nd running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans from the pole following an incident-filled final two rounds of qualifying Thursday at Circuit de la Sarthe.

Kazuki Nakajima became the first Japanese driver to claim overall pole for the twice-around-the-clock endurance classic, taking his No. 7 Toyota TS040 Hybrid to a best lap time of 3:21.789.

Nakajima’s flyer came early in the third and final qualifying session, which was extended to two hours and 30 minutes due to multiple red flags earlier in the evening. The Toyota driver improved on his 3:22.589 lap from Qualifying 2, which had put him on provisional pole.

Patrick Dempsey is used to cameras and the spotlight. Yet heading into his third 24 Hours of Le Mans start, and second collaborative effort between his Dempsey Racing organization and the European Proton Competition outfit, he’s got a better idea of how to handle it.

The debut run for Dempsey in 2009 – then in an AF Corse-run Ferrari F430 GT – was an eye-opener both into the event itself, the fervor of the French fans, and the challenge of running this 24-hour race. As it happened, he and Joe Foster had to run almost the entire second half on their own due to illness knocking their third driver out of action.

MotoGP World Championship leader Marc Marquez – who has won every race this season from pole – has enjoyed podium finishes at the Barcelona-Catalunya track for the past four years.

The Repsol Honda rider will be looking to continue his brilliant run so far this season, although he admits that his home track is not his favorite. Despite those rostrum results, Marquez has not tasted victory at Montmelo since 2010 in the 125 class.
