Danny Thompson, son of late motorsports innovator and entrepreneur Mickey Thompson, has launched a Kickstarter fundraising campaign to return his father’s 1968 streamliner, Challenger II, to the salt course at Bonneville with the intention of breaking the piston-driven world land speed record. Accomplishing that feat requires a speed of at least 450 mph, something Danny believes is possible with upgrades and improvements he and his team have been making to the original vehicle over the past two years.

“My dad was the first American to go over 400mph in a car, but he didn’t get the record. We’re going to fix that. The Challenger II had the potential in 1968, and it has the potential today.” – Danny Thompson

Vettel About To Put Title Away?

As in previous years, the Hungarian GP leads into Formula One’s August summer break, so a good result this weekend will be a huge boost for any team or driver – and, equally, a bad one will be even more painful than usual, because there’s a long wait until a chance of redemption at Spa-Francorchamps in late August.

The bottom line is that if Sebastian Vettel wins again, and his main pursuers Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso don’t bag some significant points, the German will be well on his way to securing a fourth title long before the end of the season. Not too many people currently expect this year to conclude with a final round showdown, although stranger things have happened.

Red Bull has announced that the Austrian GP will return to the F1 calendar next year, with a provisional date of July 6.

The drinks company had made a late bid to host a race this season at the Red Bull Ring – formerly the A1 Ring – but it was unable to conclude a deal with Bernie Ecclestone.
