Hello open-wheel types and thanks for all your questions. I intend to answer your questions every week during the season, so just email me at openwheelmailbag@gmail.com. Don’t feel left out if I didn’t directly respond. I appreciate your interest and passion.

Q: It’s obvious the Chipster read your mid-season report and didn’t take kindly to the grade you gave the Target Team! What did he do to turn things around in such a dramatic fashion, especially as regards Dixon? He’s sure on fire and may soon upend Helio for the points lead! And it seems as if Andretti Autosport has suddenly hit a wall…what gives? I continue to be impressed with Justin Wilson’s quiet but consistent season thus far. Ninth in the points ain’t bad given Coyne’s typical shoestring operation. I really wish J-Will could score a top ride, but I know he’s considered long of tooth at this stage in his career. Too bad, a true talent wasted.

Symonds Just The First Step, Says Williams

Symonds Just The First Step, Says Williams

Williams deputy team principal Claire Williams says that the hiring of Pat Symonds is just the first step as the team tries to regain its winning form.

In effect, Symonds, who joins on Aug. 19, replaces the departing Mike Coughlan – although they have different job titles.

“I think it’s been obvious to everybody that the performance of the team hasn’t been where we wanted,” said Williams in Hungary. “At the end of 2012, we thought we’d made a step forward with our performance that clearly when we came to Australia this year, that wasn’t the case. In order to move forward and to get to where we want to be, we needed to make changes on the technical side of the business.

“We needed to make those changes and, obviously, Pat Symonds coming on board as our new chief technical officer is part of that step, but it’s only the first of a number of good news announcement we’ll be announcing in the near term.”

Williams says that Symonds won’t just focus on next season: “Pat will divide his time between trying to make improvements to this year’s car but then working on the 2014 car, as well.”
