PROGRAMMING NOTE: The Red Bull Indianapolis GP will air LIVE on FOX Sports 1 on Sunday, August 18 in a four-hour programming block that starts at 11:00am ET.

Following nine races — the first half of the 2013 MotoGP schedule — Repsol Honda’s 20-year-old rookie Marc Marquez, has won three races leads his seasoned teammate, Dani Pedrosa, by 16 points. He also holds a 26-point lead — one more than offered by a race win — over reigning defending champion Jorge Lorenzo on the factory Yamaha.

The last time a rookie made a serious run for the premier class championship was in 1998 when Italian Max Biaggi, a four-times 250 champion, who won in his 500cc debut in Japan, was leading the points table with only three races to go with a three-point lead over eventual champion Mick Doohan and a five-point lead over Alex Crivillé.

Going into the Grand Prix of Catalunya that year, Biaggi was on course to match Kenny Roberts’ 1978 feat and become only the second rookie ever to win the premier class title in his first season.

Three seemed to be the magic number for our weekend at Road America after qualifying 3rd, finishing 3rd and taking our 3rd podium placing from six races this year in the ALMS. Luckily there was one important number one amongst all those threes!

For my team mate Tommy Milner and me, our finishing place gave us enough points to bump us back up into the lead of the GT Drivers’ points’ classification ahead of Dirk Muller and our team mates, Jan and Antonio, who were also on the podium.

After having had a nice sunny, breezy week the rain which started coming down a couple of hours before the start of the race was a bit of a surprise and not a welcome one. It was still raining a bit as Tommy set out in our No.4 Corvette C6.R and there was a lot of spray and jostling for position as the 33-strong field set off.

With less than six months to go until the season-opening Rolex 24 at Daytona, and just 10 weeks before the final champions are crowned in GRAND-AM and the American Le Mans Series, some key details surrounding next year’s United SportsCar Racing series have yet to be finalized.

Many prototype team owners in the paddock last weekend at Road America, site of the historic first, and only, combined event between both series, have voiced concerns over the timeframe for the release of the DP and P2 technical regulations and the general lack of details surrounding likely changes to their equipment for next year.

“We have no idea. Nobody has any answers; nobody is asking [us] anything. So I don’t know how we will be going testing at all, at this point. We don’t know anything,” longtime Daytona Prototype team owner Wayne Taylor told SPEED.com.

Tucked into the rolling green hills of central New York state, Round 10 of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship was held at the historic Unadilla National on Saturday in New Berlin, N.Y. Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto could not have asked for a better day as he qualified fastest, took both holeshots and led every lap to finish 1-1 and extend his points lead. Teammate Jake Weimer matched his best performance of the year by finishing on the podium in Moto 2 and fourth overall on the day. Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Blake Baggett battled through both motos to finish fifth overall and Martin Davalos rounded out the top-10 overall after picking up the holeshot in Moto 2. In the 250 class Adam Cianciarulo, Justin Hill and Darryn Durham finished 15th, 19th, and 21st respectively, while Tyla Rattray finished 16th in the 450 class.

Unchallenged

After missing the podium in Millville two weeks ago and earning the Ricky Carmichael Hard Charger Award, the current points leader reassured his spot at the top of the standings by dominating the track and competition at Unadilla. Villopoto earned his sixth Oakley Bomb Award as top qualifier in the muddy, rutted conditions. He went on to grab both holeshots, lead every lap, and won both motos by more than 12 seconds. Celebrating his 25th birthday on Tuesday, Villopoto also celebrates a 44-point lead in pursuit of his second 450 Pro Motocross Championship.
