Major revisions to the infield road course are central to the future of the race at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Talks were being held in advance of Sunday’s Indianapolis Grand Prix for a contract extension, with the often-criticized infield layout at the Brickyard a central issue.

Nine-time world champion and British star Cal Crutchlow echoed the thoughts of leading riders after qualifying for the 27-lap race.

Spanish young gun , riding for the Repsol Honda team, took pole position with a record lap for the 4.2-kilometer Indy track.

Marquez’s time of 1:37.958 was almost one second faster than the previous pole record held by his teammate, Dani Pedrosa.

But lap times could be dramatically faster next if the Indy GP, with track changes, is confirmed on the MotoGP calendar.

Rossi confirmed that IMS wants to continue with the premier-class MotoGP event but is insistent that complete resurface of the road course is essential.

The issue was raised by riders at Friday evening’s Safety Commission meeting at the Brickyard.

holds little hope of ending a five-year losing streak at the Indianapolis Grand Prix.

The nine-time world champion has qualified ninth, on the outside of the third row, for Sunday’s 27-lap race.

He was a massive 1.3 seconds off the pace of pole man (Repsol Honda) and in a disconsolate mood after qualifying.

Rossi won the inaugural Indy race in 2008 when a wild hurricane hit the Brickyard and forced the raced to be red-flagged after 20 laps.

But in qualifying for the 2013 edition, Rossi put in his worst Saturday performance of this season with his ninth-fastest time.

He has won just one race, the Dutch TT at Assen in June, since rejoining Yamaha at the beginning of this season.

PROGRAMMING NOTE: The Red Bull will air LIVE on FOX Sports 1 on Sunday, Aug. 18 in a four-hour programming block that starts at 11 a.m. ET.

Rookie hero underlined his absolute domination of the developing Red Bull Indianapolis GP weekend on Saturday with a crushing performance to secure the pole for Sunday’s 27-lap Grand Prix.

Entering qualifying, the 20-year-old world championship leader had topped every single premier-class session of the weekend. And rather than allow any of his opponents a chance to strike back, QP only saw Marquez further his advantage with a stunning 1:37.958 lap.

That time eclipsed the old lap record (1:38.813) of his Repsol Honda teammate, Dani Pedrosa, by nearly a full second. It was also more than a half-second stronger than any of his rivals managed in the session, making him a solid favorite to claim his third consecutive MotoGP win tomorrow at the Brickyard.

Should Marquez win, he’d have stormed to victory in all three of the nation’s Grands Prix this season and become only the third rider in history to have won three races in one nation in a single season.
