Formula 1 Notebook: Williams Racing Shines Ahead Of Austrian GP

The 2014 Formula 1 season has been dominated by the Mercedes duo of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, but on Saturday in Austria it was Williams Martini Racing shining with a 1-2 effort in qualifying.

Felipe Massa managed to capture his first pole position since the 2008 Brazilian GP, while teammate Valtteri Bottas enjoyed the best qualifying performance of his career. We caught up with the Williams duo and their fellow drivers to see what they had to say before Sunday’s race.

Lewis Hamilton says he’s looking forward to fighting his way up from ninth on the grid in Austria.

The Mercedes driver was surprisingly upbeat given his disastrous qualifying session, which began with his first lap time being cancelled for exceeding track limits, and ended with a spin at Turn 2 on his final run.

After his all-conquering four-year reign over Formula 1, Sebastian Vettel this season has become used to getting beaten.

The four-time world champion from Germany was eliminated Saturday in the second round of qualifying on his team’s home track and missed out on a top-10 start position in Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix.

Harley-Davidson revealed its first electric motorcycle on Thursday called Project LiveWire.

It’s the most radical departure in the 111-year history of the brand, best known for building rolling thunder on two wheels. A vision for a possible future production bike, Project LiveWire features more of a sporty touring look than the company’s classic cruisers.

Ferrari Formula 1 chief Marco Mattiacci says that discussions about a collaboration with Gene Haas for 2016 are still ongoing.

A technology partnership with Ferrari has been Haas’ aim from the start although the American insists that Mercedes remains a possibility.

Following the latest testing for the Suzuki MotoGP team in Barcelona, Randy de Puniet has pinpointed electronics as the area in which most improvements are still required.

Having first returned to MotoGP testing with a Mitsubishi electronics system, at Sepang earlier this year Suzuki used a Magneti Marelli ECU for the first time. This week, the company – with both de Puniet and Takuya Tsuda at the helm – concentrated on a new specification engine and chassis revisions, as well as their latest work on the electronics side of things.
