Dani Pedrosa set the pace as Friday morning marked opening practice for the Shell Advance Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix. Having suffered a crash last time out in Aragón, the 2012 Sepang winner topped the timesheets from Marc Marquez and Jorge Lorenzo as the championship battle intensifies at the start of the ‘flyaway’ triple-header.
Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton had the fastest lap in Friday’s opening practice session for the Japanese Formula One Grand Prix, edging teammate Nico Rosberg and championship leader Sebastian Vettel.
Hamilton’s time of 1 minute, 34.157 seconds around the Suzuka circuit was just 0.330 seconds faster than Rosberg. Vettel was six tenths of a second off Hamilton’s time.
Target Chip Ganassi Racing driver Dario Franchitti was released from Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center in Houston on Thursday.
He will be traveling to Indianapolis where he will be reevaluated over the next few days and ultimately await a second surgery to his right ankle, which had previously been stabilized.
“I’m overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and I’m thankful to have such a great family and such wonderful friends and fans. Thanks to everyone at the hospital and the track who took such good care of me during my stay in Houston. I look forward to watching Scott (Dixon), Alex (Tagliani) and the Target team next weekend on television, and will be pulling for them as they go for another championship.”
