Nico Hulkenberg put in another storming drive for Sauber in Japan, running fourth for much of the race before dropping to sixth after Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen passed him in the closing laps.

Hulkenberg, who has now finished fifth, ninth, fourth and sixth in the last four races, said he wasn’t too upset to lose places so close to the flag.

“We shouldn’t be too disappointed,” he said. “I think we did everything we could, and my tires were just giving up a little bit. We were fighting obviously all through the race. Following Sunday’s draining 20-lap MotoGP race at the Shell Advance Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix, Jorge Lorenzo said he had given it his best shot at Sepang but he could not compete with his Repsol Honda rivals.

Lorenzo made an excellent start to the race as he so often does, overtaking Dani Pedrosa early on lap one after his rival had taken the hole-shot.

Having started in fourth on the grid, Lorenzo held the lead in the early stages before Pedrosa made his move and took over at the front, the Honda rider eventually running away with the victory by 2.7s.
