Nicky Hayden made the most of Saturday’s 75-minute qualifying session at a damp Twin Ring Motegi, as the American rider captured his first front row start since Jerez in 2012.

Hayden held the provisional pole for much of the final 30 minutes, but his best time of 1:54.539 would only be good enough for third. Pole winner and championship leader were the only riders to outpace the 2006 World Champion.

Although Hayden was pleased with third, he admitted to being bitter over failing to nab the pole, which would have been his first since Portugal in 2007.

F1: Grosjean Qualifies Dismal 17th, Rues Tire Strategy In India

Romain Grosjean, who has matured from an impetuous racer into a regular podium contender, can blame firm tires rather than loose driving for his woes in qualifying for the Indian Grand Prix.

Grosjean will start from 17th on the grid Sunday after Lotus’ gamble on sticking with medium tires backfired in the first qualifying session Saturday.

The Frenchman was philosophical about the decision and is still hopeful of challenging for a podium finish — if not the Red Bulls — to boost his team in its battle for second place in the constructors’ title.

Marc Marquez will start the AirAsia Grand Prix of Japan from second place on the grid, ahead of another opportunity to clinch the world title on Sunday.

First presented with a chance to seal the crown in Australia last weekend, Marquez’s race ended in disqualification as winner took victory. At Motegi, the Yamaha Factory Racing rider again heads up the grid from Repsol Honda Team’s Marquez, bidding to become the youngest premier class title winner in history.

Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo of Spain claimed pole position for the Japanese on Saturday, putting himself in place to challenge championship leader and compatriot in Sunday’s race.

Lorenzo was 0.658 seconds faster than Marquez in a single 75-minute qualifying session which was cut short because of rain at the Twin Ring Motegi track north of Tokyo.
