Three unquestionable talents in their own rights. Luis Salom, Maverick Viñales and Alex Rins have ensured an extremely closely-fought Moto3 title battle in 2013. Curiously, each one will have arrived at next weekend’s Valencia title-decider in their own imitable way.

The plot:

Something that happens rarely in the World Championship. Three riders, three completely different styles and three different methods of overcoming adversity. So it’s three riders, five points between them and one race to go.

Kimi Raikkonen has been excluded from qualifying after his car failed a floor deflection test in Abu Dhabi. He will be allowed to start from the back of the grid.

In Hungary, a similar thing happened with Romain Grosjean, but the stewards accepted that the floor was damaged.

However, this time the circumstances were different — in effect, the stewards noted it was not the first time it had happened and the issue should have been addressed — and thus the car was deemed to have failed to comply with the regulations.

Casey Stoner has come to the end of a three-day test at Japan’s Sportsland Sugo circuit, run between Monday and Wednesday. The two-time MotoGP World Champion worked on the 2013 and 2014 RC213V Honda prototype machines.

Although the Australian was pleased that rain did not affect proceedings as had been the case with previous test sessions at Motegi earlier this year, Stoner was unable to test the Honda Production Racer which instead was run by Takumi Takahashi.

Sebastian Vettel hasn’t made many mistakes in 2013, but a tiny one in Q3 in Abu Dhabi cost him pole position to teammate Mark Webber.

Vettel had a little glitch at the first turn on his final hot lap, but still managed to beat everyone else to secure second place. He insisted afterwards that he was not too disappointed, given that he still headed off a strong challenge from Mercedes.

The Mexican and New Jersey races that currently figure on the 2014 F1 World Championship calendar will both be absent from the final version when it emerges from the FIA World Motor Sport Council in December.

Sources have confirmed that Mexico is definitely off. While Bernie Ecclestone would not officially confirm to FOXSports.com that the race has been cancelled, he made it clear that the challenge of building a new pit complex in time for next November had proved insurmountable.
