When the Verizon IndyCar Series arrives at the fourth largest city in North America for its annual street race in Toronto, James Hinchcliffe of nearby Oakville, Ontario is hailed as a conquering hero. His face is displayed on billboards and magazines throughout the city and his Honda commercial runs often on Canadian television.

Unfortunately for the “Mayor of Hinchtown,” he has been able to conquer his hometown race.

In six IndyCar Series races at Toronto, Hinchcliffe has never finished better than eighth. He tied his career-high Toronto finish in Sunday’s first race and had hopes of improving that in Sunday’s second race.

Bernie Ecclestone says he has no concerns about the Russian GP in the light of the MH17 tragedy.

While Ecclestone and the FIA have always insisted that motor sport is not affected by politics, it seems inevitable that in the coming weeks the international spotlight will fall upon the Sochi race and any other high-profile events scheduled to take place in Russia.

Lewis Hamilton did a superb job to salvage third in Hockenheim after starting only 20th, but while he put on a brace face afterwards there was no hiding his disappointment at losing more ground in the title battle.

Hamilton dropped from 15th on the grid after receiving a five-place penalty for a gearbox change. He also changed from Brembo to Carbon Industrie discs, although that did not lead to a pitlane start for a change to the car under parc ferme, as had been feared.

IndyCar ran two races in Toronto on Sunday, where rain wreaked havoc on both the schedule and driver strategy.

The series had planned to run one race Saturday and one on Sunday until rain washed out the first event. It instead began Sunday morning, roughly five hours before the start of the second race, and won by Sebastien Bourdais. He broke a 52-race losing streak dating to 2007 in claiming a dominating win on the dry street course at Exhibition Place.

But the rain returned for the second race, and IndyCar officials moved the start up 10 minutes in an attempt to run as much as possible in dry conditions. The sky eventually did open, the track became slick and drivers darted to pit road for rain tires.
