Lewis Hamilton topped the times ahead of Mercedes teammate and series leader Nico Rosberg on Friday in second practice at the British Grand Prix.

The 2008 World Champion clocked a best lap of 1:34.508 to outpace Rosberg, who leads him by 29 points in the championship, by 0.228 seconds.

But on a warm and windy day Hamilton then stopped on track with an engine problem that hit his preparations for Sunday’s key race, which he has targeted for victory in a bid to reboot his title challenge.

Lewis Hamilton says he’s not surprised about the strength of the challenge from Nico Rosberg so far this season.

Hamilton had a streak of four wins, but some bad luck and Rosberg’s good form have handed the German the edge.

Nico Rosberg has put himself in position to beat his high-profile teammate to the 2014 Formula 1 World Championship.

That is the view of Lewis Hamilton’s countryman Murray Walker, the famous former F1 commentator, ahead of the 29-year-old British driver’s home race at Silverstone.

Nico Rosberg extended his championship lead with his third victory of the year in Austria, taking advantage of the fact that teammate Lewis Hamilton started back in ninth.

Although the Briton was quickly up to fourth and on Rosberg’s tail, he never got into a position to properly challenge Nico as both men had to fight their way past the Williams duo on strategy, and then preserve their equipment. Rosberg insisted that the race went to plan.

Formula One returned to business as usual Sunday as Nico Rosberg led Lewis Hamilton at the Austrian Grand Prix for the sixth 1-2 finish by Mercedes.

Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo won the Canadian GP two weeks ago and Williams’ Felipe Massa took pole position for Sunday’s race but this had little effect on Mercedes which had missed out on the front row of the grid for the first time this season.

“I was still very confident going into the race and knew I could win starting from third,” said Rosberg, who celebrated his third win of the year and sixth overall as he extended his lead in the drivers’ championship over Hamilton to 29 points — 165 vs. 136.
