Jorge Lorenzo hasn’t captured a win since mid-June, and has since dropped to third in the standings, 44 points behind championship leader Marc Marquez.

On Friday, it looked as if Lorenzo was back in top form as he set a blazing lap of 2:02.734, two tenths quicker than Marquez.

Championship contender Dani Pedrosa trailed in third followed by 2012 pole-sitter Alvaro Bautista. Valentino Rossi, who has captured three premier class wins at Silverstone, rounded out the top five.

The British round of the World Championship is being run later this year, having been shifted from its previous June date to a new August/September slot. There were spots of rain in the preceding Moto3 session, but the track remained completely dry for the premier class runners. Marc Marquez topped the timesheets with 2’03.816, two tenths up on both Jorge Lorenzo and Cal Crutchlow as teammate Dani Pedrosa and GO&FUN Honda Gresini’s Alvaro Bautista completed the top five. Lorenzo’s teammate Valentino Rossi was sixth, having moved up on his final lap of the 45-minute session.
