MotoGP: Pedrosa Already Noticing Tire Differences In Testing

Dani Pedrosa racked up 88 laps as the three-day tire test began on Monday. The sole Repsol Honda Team rider present, the three-time premier class championship runner-up completed more laps than any other rider present.

Following the tire-related problems of the 2013 Australian Grand Prix, this week’s test features new tires from both Bridgestone () and Dunlop (Moto2). In Pedrosa’s case, the Spaniard started Monday on last year’s tires in order to compare them with the 2014 bike, before conducting short runs (each of a minimum of six laps) as research started with the new experimental tires.

MotoGP: Crutchlow Learning From Scares In Australia Testing

Cal Crutchlow experienced several frightening moments as Phillip Island tire testing began on Monday, but insists that these are helping both himself and Bridgestone as the Japanese tire company looks to continue develop.

The point of this week’s test in Australia is to develop tires that are able to cope with a full race distance, unlike those of last year which were unable to cope with the higher average speeds on a new track surface. On Monday, Crutchlow was second quickest to as the three-day test commenced.

Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo was Monday’s fastest rider at Phillip Island as the three-day tire safety test got underway.

The former MotoGP World Champion’s best time of 1’29.213 put him top of the pile though lap times and bike development are not the focus this week. The riders and teams are working on tire durability and have a specific schedule to follow over the 72 hours at the Australian venue.

Ducati Team riders and will compete in the 2014 World Championship on ‘Open’ class configured Desmosedici machines.

Ducati believe the ‘Open’ option gives them more freedom for evolution during 2014 and state that they will keep developing their bikes during the championship to improve competitiveness.

From Monday to Wednesday this week (March 3-5), the Factory teams of Honda, Yamaha and will be on-track at Phillip Island as they and two Moto2 squads engage in a tire-focused test at the Australian circuit.

Following last year’s Australian Grand Prix – when the premier class race was divided into two halves by pit-stops and the Moto2 event was shortened, due to the abrasive new track surface leading to severe tire wear – it was decided to organize this test at the island track which will host the 16th round of the 2014 season.
