After struggling on Friday at Mugello, DRIVE M7 Aspar rider Nicky Hayden expects to have wrist surgery next week, whilst a decision on his continued participation in the Gran Premio d’Italia TIM will be made on Saturday.

Hayden was one of the few riders to venture out this afternoon as he tested out his injured wrist after only managing six laps in the morning.

As the premier class action on the opening day of the 2014 Gran Premio d’Italia TIM concluded at Mugello, light rain restricted the riders’ activity – with Marc Marquez fastest on Friday courtesy of his FP1 best time.

Some late timed laps in FP2 for the MotoGP riders saw Ducati Team’s test rider and wild card this weekend Michele Pirro top with a 2:05.435 in the mixed conditions, with only Nicky Hayden (Drive M7 Aspar), Alvaro Bautista (GO&FUN Honda Gresini) and Hiroshi Aoyama (Drive M7 Aspar) joining him on a relatively meaningless afternoon timesheet.

Video: MotoGP Le Mans podium all crashed in Mugello last year

The Italian Grand Prix at Mugello marks an important weekend for all three Le Mans podium finishers: Marc Marquez (1st), Valentino Rossi (2nd) and Alvaro Bautista (3rd).

Mugello remains one of two circuits Marquez does not have a podium on and serves as the home race for nine-time champion Valentino Rossi, who crashed out in a collision with Bautista at this circuit last year.
