Following French tire manufacturer Michelin’s official tender, Dorna is pleased to announce that Michelin is to become the Official Tire Supplier to MotoGP as of the 2016 World Championship season.

At the beginning of May 2014 Dorna, in agreement with the FIM, opened a tender for tire manufacturers interested in becoming Official Tire Supplier to MotoGP from the 2016 season.

has traditionally been operated in the penumbra of a document called the Concorde Agreement. This legally-binding document ties the teams, the commercial right’s owners (FOM) and the governing body () together in a dance of speed, technology and perhaps most importantly…money. The agreement expired in December of 2012 and to date, no extension has been signed.

What we do have is a memorandum of understanding between the FIA and FOM as to how the Concorde Agreement will be completed. boss says that the teams and the commercial right’s holder have already signed a commercial agreement but the FIA’s ink is the only thing missing on the signature line.

has downplayed ’s prospects of replacing as ’s sole tire supplier, despite the French company formally confirming to the that it is interested in the role.

Ecclestone has always been close to Pirelli, while FIA President is known to be sympathetic to Michelin. Exactly how the tire saga will play out in the coming weeks remains to be seen, but the bottom line is that time is running out for all concerned.

’s interest in returning to is genuine, sources close to the have confirmed.

While it’s long been assumed that will remain as sole supplier in 2014, and has made commercial arrangements with both teams and , the bottom line is that it has not yet signed a deal with the FIA.

Nor has the FIA issue an official tender for the supply contract, which it would normally be expected to do.

It’s believed that Michelin’s formal interest would trigger a tender, and that the FIA will go through the motions of asking all possible suppliers if they are interested before considering the offers from those who are.
