Lewis Hamilton must manage tire heat in Malaysia GP

Lewis Hamilton ended Friday in Malaysia in fourth place, with a best lap some 0.142s off .

Like his team mate, Hamilton had concerns about the tires.

“We were just working to understand the tires, which are very, very hot,” he said. “And also just making sure that the balance is right, so you can go as long as possible.

Rosberg runs quickest in FP2 but has concerns about tires

Nico Rosberg set the pace in Malaysia on Friday, but the Mercedes driver admitted that keeping his tires in good shape was a major concern.

“It was a decent day,” said Rosberg. “It was very, very hot, tough for the car and tough for the tires. We never expected so much tire degradation, it’s just massive degradation out there, which is a big challenge. For sure there will be lots of different strategies. With the tires, anything can happen.”

Niki Lauda has hit back at the critics who are slamming the revolutionary new face of formula one.

Ron Walker, the Australian grand prix chief who is a key Bernie Ecclestone ally, is leading the charge by threatening to sue the sport and switch to Indycar racing after hearing the sound of the new turbo V6 engines.

Nico Rosberg won the Melbourne race with a half-minute advantage, but Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso was quoted afterwards by Auto Motor und Sport as suspecting the German was “playing with us” on the roads around Albert Park.

In all likelihood, the will quickly develop into a battle between teammates Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, which begs the question, will they be allowed to race?

Given the potential challenges of fuel consumption, tire durability and of course reliability, a team boss could be forgiven for imposing orders, especially when his cars have such a big advantage over the rest. Why waste a guaranteed one-two when the cars are still potentially fragile by risking retirement?
