McLaren Mercedes has failed to find a title sponsor to replace the departed Vodafone, so this weekend in Australia, the team will run a special Mobil livery to celebrate a 20-year relationship with the American brand.

The team linked up at McLaren’s first race with Mercedes power in Australia in 1995.

Boullier Confident That McLaren Can Progress

New McLaren racing director Eric Boullier says that the team still has to find performance – but he’s confident that the new car has a lot of potential to be tapped.

“Our winter test preparations have been largely trouble-free,” said the Frenchman. “Our aim with MP4-29 was to deliver a solid and reliable platform, which we can develop throughout the season. In terms of full performance, we’re not there yet, but there’s more to come, not least because there’s a hunger and belief that’s evident throughout the entire McLaren organization.

A week before the circus gathers in Melbourne for the 2014 opener, the fate of team boss Martin Whitmarsh is still not clear.

Team supremo has replaced Whitmarsh as McLaren Group chief executive, is effectively the new team principal, and it is believed 55-year-old Whitmarsh is not in the running to fill the newly-created role as Formula 1 CEO.

Despite a rare reliability glitch with the new McLaren, Jenson Button was encouraged by the form of the car in Bahrain on Friday.

McLaren has been near the top of the mileage charts all winter, but on Friday, Button ran only 49 laps after the car required some gearbox work.
