Back in business: American F1 driver trades Caterham suit for Marussia one

Alexander Rossi has been named reserve driver of Marussia having left arch rivals just before the recent German GP.

The team says that Rossi will step in if one of the other drivers has a problem, and he will also do some FP1 sessions – which means that he will probably be seen in action in Austin.

Fabio Leimer is at F1′s crossroads.

The reigning GP2 champion missed out on a race seat on this year’s grid, but Tages-Anzeiger newspaper says he now has a solid offer on the table.

Jules Bianchi earned the Marussia team its first-ever points with a superb ninth place in the Monaco GP – in the team’s fifth season.

Bianchi actually finished eighth on the road, but he had a five second penalty added to his race time, which dropped him behind Romain Grosjean.

Rain meant that F1 testing action got off to a slow start in Barcelona today, and once the track had dried out in the afternoon there was a surprise as Max Chilton set the fastest time of the day for .

The Briton was trying the supersoft tire – which will be used in Monaco – in qualifying trim, while rivals had very different objectives. Nevertheless it was a nice confidence boost for a team that has outpaced rivals recently.

Formula 1 could axe Friday morning practice to cut costs

F1 could axe Friday morning practice sessions next year, as teams consider how to cut costs in the absence of a mandatory budget cap.

Although keenly supported by the small teams, and championed by FIA president Jean Todt, the 2015 budget cap was vetoed by the powerful ‘Strategy Group’ teams including grandees Ferrari, Red Bull and Mercedes.
