In Valencia this weekend, fans the world over will enjoy a final-race decider for the first time in seven years. On the last occasion of such an occurrence, a Repsol Honda Team rider claimed his first World Championship by beating the previous title winner, who happened to be riding for Yamaha Factory Racing.

The last time was 2006. Honda’s Nicky Hayden, who in the previous round had been taken out of action by rookie teammate , claimed the ultimate honor in the most unbelievable of circumstances as made a rare mistake. Seven years on, more drama is certain as Marc Marquez and Jorge Lorenzo go head-to-head at the climax of a magical season. The amazing newcomer up against the hard-charging seasoned campaigner and two-time World Champion.

Seven years have passed by since Valencia last hosted a final-race decider. In 2013, two candidates arrive separated by 13 points.

It’s the reigning champion against the 20-year-old upstart. It’s Yamaha Factory Racing versus Repsol Honda Team. It’s Jorge Lorenzo and Marc Marquez. And, of course, it’s 99 versus 93. There are more than six numbers between them, though.

Jorge Lorenzo stopped just short of calling it a perfect race but this is as good as it gets.

Lorenzo’s brilliantly conceived and “close to perfect” victory in Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix has triggered a last race showdown for the 2013 World Championship.

After gambling on a soft tire choice, Lorenzo hammered out 24 laps in a masterclass of front-running pace to pile the pressure on his title rival with just one race remaining.

Marc Marquez has once again failed to wrap up the 2013 World Championship, and will now look to capture the title in two weeks time at Valencia.

Marquez needed to outscore eventual race winner Jorge Lorenzo by eight points in Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix to clinch the title, but the Repsol Honda ace was unable to do so. Instead, Marquez finished second to Lorenzo, decreasing his championship lead to only 13 points with one race remaining in the season.

The 20-year-old struggled to keep pace with fellow Spaniard Lorenzo, and acknowledged that it was better to settle for second rather than crash out while vying for the win.

Jorge Lorenzo has triumphed for the seventh time in 2013, winning Sunday’s AirAsia Grand Prix of Japan. The Yamaha Factory Racing rider fought off a stiff challenge from Repsol Honda Team’s Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa to ensure that the title battle goes down to the wire for the first time since 2006.

Providing a truly unpredictable end to the late-season triple-header, the Motegi weekend was very much shaken up by inclement weather conditions; this led to the cancellation of all track action on Friday as well as heavy modifications to the Saturday agenda. Ironically, Sunday’s race took place under clear blue skies in Japan.
