technical director James Key has questioned whether the distinctive ‘twin-prong’ nose seen on the Lotus E22 is within the spirit what was intended by the rules. He acknowledged that it appears to have been accepted as legal by the .

“The Lotus nose needs clarification, but it’s a very clever idea,” he said. “The question really is, is it within the spirit? We’ll see. It’s really down to the FIA and Lotus to discuss that obviously. If they run it, then it’s passed the impact test, and they’re happy.”

Gerard Lopez took over as the team principal of Lotus on Friday as a replacement for Eric Boullier, fueling widespread media reports that the Frenchman is on the move to Formula One rival McLaren.

Lopez will combine his new role with his previous position of co-chairman at Lotus, which had a strong season on the track last year despite financial problems off it.

Lotus is the first team to confirm that it is skipping the test at the end of this month, and the Enstone outfit will instead debut its 2014 car at the second test in Bahrain.

In effect teams a choice between missing the test and opting for extra R&D time, or attending it and spending the interval before Bahrain reacting to what was learned.
