Lewis Hamilton will start the German GP from 15th after he suffered a front right brake disc failure in Q1 and spun heavily into the tire wall.

Hamilton did not take part in Q2 and was thus officially 16th, but he gained a place from an Esteban Gutierrez grid penalty.

Out of choice Hamilton uses Brembo discs while Nico Rosberg uses Carbon Industrie – it’s not uncommon for drivers to swap around as they search for better feel in the car – so the German does not have an issue. The broken disc was new today and the team has no explanation for the failure, although the likelihood is that it was a one-off manufacturing fault.

Formula One championship leader Nico Rosberg claimed pole position for the German Grand Prix as Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton crashed out in Saturday’s qualifying session and will start 15th on the grid.

Rosberg completed the fastest lap on the Hockenheimring in 1 minute, 16.540 seconds in the third part of the session for what was also the weekend’s fastest time.

“Home race, to be on pole is fantastic,” the German said. “Of course I would have preferred it was an open fight with Lewis. I was a little less happy as a result (of Hamilton’s crash) because Lewis didn’t have a shot at it in the end but all in all, yeah, a fantastic day up to now.”

“A pretty good day today,” Hamilton said.

Rosberg had been leading but he went off track on the second turn and his teammate then topped the leaderboard on supersoft tires for the first time.

The talk in the paddock ever since Formula 1 left Silverstone last Sunday has been over the ‘FRIC’ system and whether it will be banned prior to the upcoming German GP.

Whether it will or not remains a mystery, and talk is that the dominant Mercedes W05 Hybrid may be the car that suffers most if the system is deemed illegal. However, as far as the Silver Arrows crew is concerned, its business as usual as they get set for the team’s home Grand Prix.
