Report: Button Could Be Shown Exit At McLaren

Jenson Button has played down increasing speculation about his future in .

The 2009 World Champion is out of contract at the end of 2014, but McLaren boss said recently he thinks a new deal for the 34-year-old is likely.

That may not be right. Britain’s Times and Daily Mail newspapers are reporting the real likelihood that next weekend’s Silverstone race could be Button’s last British Grand Prix with the team.

Jenson Button was one of the unsung heroes of the , the driver having snatched a surprise fourth place after running as low as 11th for most of the first stint.

Button found pace as the race went on and on the penultimate lap he jumped up from eighth to sixth when Fernando Alonso and Nico Hulkenberg got tangled up at hairpin – the Spaniard ran wide while the German lost momentum on the exit. Right after that at the start of the next lap, Jenson gained two more spots when Sergio Perez and Felipe Massa crashed out.

Jenson Button insists that he intends to race on in 2015, but adds that it’s too early to be finalizing a deal with McLaren.

Inevitably there has been speculation about Button stepping aside, possibly to make way for protege Stoffel Vandoorne – although Fernando Alonso’s name continues to be linked to a return to the team.

That is the claim of team boss Eric Boullier, even though the Frenchman’s immediate task after joining McLaren from Lotus is to win races with Mercedes power.
