F1: Todt Supports Move For Permanent Race Numbers

The newly re-elected says he supports moves to reinstate permanent race numbers in formula one.

In an earlier era, F1 fans became accustomed to associating a number with their favorite driver — like Gilles Villeneuve’s fabled 27, or the ‘red 5′ of Nigel Mansell.

Jean Todt unanimously won a second term as president of motorsport’s governing body FIA on Friday, running unopposed.

The Frenchman’s main rival, of Britain, pulled out of the race last month because of a lack of backing.

David Ward has backed a proposal by several FIA member clubs to reform an electoral system that could see the presidential candidate frozen out of the 2013 leadership contest.

The clubs want to reduce the amount of support a candidate needs to gain in order to be nominated, a requirement that could yet preclude Ward from contesting the upcoming election. The deadline is Nov. 15, and Ward has yet to confirm that he has been nominated and is thus able to take on .

The FIA’s Ethics Committee has sided with Jean Todt over the support agreements issue – and left would-be presidential candidate struggling to find the support with which to be formally nominated.

If he doesn’t, Todt will be unopposed in the coming election.
