Highlights: IndyCar race at Iowa comes down to late pass for win

Tony Kanaan looked to have the 2014 Iowa Corn Indy 300 in the books for most of the race last Saturday night, yet a late race charge by Ryan Hunter-Reay had him checking in his mirrors.

With Juan-Pablo Montoya and Will Power having difficult races at the series’ smallest circuit, Helio Castroneves was able to come out of the weekend with a solid points lead.

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Ryan Hunter-Reay blew past the field with two laps to go and won the IndyCar race at Iowa Speedway on Saturday for his first victory since the Indianapolis 500.

It was the fifth straight win in Iowa for Andretti Autosport, and the second in three years for Hunter-Reay.

NEWTON, Iowa – The Verizon IndyCar Series will review its policy regarding drive-thru penalties, INDYCAR President of Competition Derrick Walker told FOXSports.com Saturday evening, a few hours prior to the start of the Iowa Corn Indy 300 at Iowa Speedway.

Walker, who dictates all competition policy for INDYCAR, believes the drive-thru penalty is often not appropriate for some infractions. That penalty has been called quite often this year with Team Penske driver Will Power getting five drive-thru penalties so far this season including last Sunday’s race at Pocono when he blocked teammate Helio Castroneves.

On Saturday night the 2014 Verizon IndyCar series will appear under the lights for the Iowa Corn Indy 300.

Although the track currently ranks as the shortest on the IndyCar circuit, the drivers are quick to point out that they do not let the small size of the oval deceive them, with Tony Kanaan stating that “as far as the sensation of speed, it’s probably the highest one we go to.”

MOORESVILLE, North Carolina – On the track, Marco Andretti is driving with fierce desire and determination that has led Andretti Autosport General Manager Kyle Moyer to say it’s the best he’s ever seen Mario Andretti’s grandson race. Unfortunately, mechanical failures, mistakes and plain bad luck has the son of team owner Michael Andretti mired in seventh place in the Verizon IndyCar Series standings.

Perhaps a return to his best racetrack will be enough to save Andretti’s season.
