Dario Franchitti has been diagnosed with a spinal fracture that will not require surgery, a fracture to the right ankle and a concussion after being involved in a serious crash during Race 2 of the Houston Grand Prix.
Franchitti was battling with Takuma Sato on the final lap when they collided, sending Franchitti airborne and into the catch fence in Turn 5. EJ Viso, who was also involved, managed to miss Franchitti’s destroyed car, but T-boned Sato.
Franchitti, a four-time series champion, was transported via ground to Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center where he will stay overnight for observation.
Sato and Viso were evaluated on the scene and released.
The crash sent pieces of the car and catch fence into the stands where fans were seated.
IndyCar said one series official suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital, and Houston Fire Department spokesman Ruy Lozano said 13 fans suffered injuries, with two transported to hospitals.
