Quadriplegic Schmidt hits 100 mph at Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS – During his Indianapolis 500 career as a driver, Sam Schmidt made three four-lap qualification attempts to make the starting lineup of the race from 1997-99. Schmidt’s best qualification effort came in 1999 when he started seventh in the 33-car starting lineup.

Yet Schmidt made his most impressive four-lap run Sunday morning, when he drove a specially prepared Corvette Stingray around the 2.5-mile oval.

Ed Carpenter won the Indianapolis 500 pole for the second straight year, posting a four-lap average of 231.067 mph.

He was the last of the nine fastest qualifiers to hit the track Sunday at . He knocked off on the last lap to start first on the May 25 race.

When Ed Carpenter, and were pushed to the edge Saturday, each remained calm and came up with their best-qualifying runs of the day.

Now they have to do it again one more time Sunday.

The American, Colombian and Brazilian who have celebrated some of their biggest career moments at Indianapolis each made daring runs over the final 80 minutes Saturday to take the top three seeds heading into Sunday’s Indianapolis 500 shootout. Carpenter finished first with a four-lap qualifying average of 230.661 mph. Munoz was second at 230.460.

Like many race drivers throughout the world who were youngsters in the 1990s Brazil’s, Ayrton Senna was Verizon Series driver Simon Pagenaud’s hero. When Pagenaud was growing up in France he remembers the great battles between Senna and France’s Alain Prost for the World Championship.

Pagenaud was heartbroken on that fateful day when Senna was killed in a crash on May 1, 1994 at Imola, Italy, but 20 years after his death, Senna remains an inspiration to the current generation of IndyCar Series and Formula 1 stars.

INDIANAPOLIS – Call this year the “Bizarro World” of the Indianapolis 500.

Bump Day is now on the first day of qualifications, instead of the second, and Pole Day is on Sunday and not Saturday.

It’s the latest attempt to generate interest in Indianapolis 500 Qualifying – an event that used to draw race day-sized crowds to the just two or three decades ago.
