Romain Grosjean, who has matured from an impetuous racer into a regular podium contender, can blame firm tires rather than loose driving for his woes in qualifying for the Indian Grand Prix.

Grosjean will start from 17th on the grid Sunday after Lotus’ gamble on sticking with medium tires backfired in the first qualifying session Saturday.

The Frenchman was philosophical about the decision and is still hopeful of challenging for a podium finish — if not the Red Bulls — to boost his team in its battle for second place in the constructors’ title.

Sebastian Vettel will start from pole position at the Indian Grand Prix, shoring up the Red Bull driver’s bid for an almost inevitable fourth straight Formula One title.

Vettel only needs to finish fifth or better Sunday to wrap up the championship with three races remaining, and bettered his own lap record to claim his third straight pole at Buddh International Circuit. The German has won both previous races, leading every lap.

He clocked 1 minute, 24.119 seconds to beat his nearest rival by 0.7 seconds.
