Virgin Racing, one of ten teams signed to compete in the inaugural Formula E series, revealed the names of its two drivers on Tuesday.
“Jaime and Sam are young yet experienced drivers and fantastic guys off the racetrack to boot,” said founder of Virgin, Sir Richard Branson, in an interview with FIAFormulaE.com. “I’m delighted to welcome them both to the Virgin Racing family. Jaime has demonstrated speed and talent at the very highest level whilst Sam is a proven race winner. I am sure they will be a formidable force on the circuits, let sparks fly!”
“I’m thrilled to be driving for an organization like Virgin,” Alguersuari told FIAFormulaE.com, “I’m going to be driving for a great team with a wealth of experience and I can’t wait to get out on the streets and put these cars to the test.”
“To be a part of the Virgin brand is hugely beneficial to me,” Bird, who won five GP2 races in 2013, told FIAFormulaE.com. “It’s a British company, it’s world-renowned, we have a great infrastructure and great people behind us. Richard Branson is obviously on board as well, which is amazing. The team personnel that we’ve chosen are all experienced and have all been champions in all forms of motorsport, including at the pinnacle of racing. I’m in the right place for this championship for sure.”
Alguersuari and Bird, along with Lucas di Grassi and Daniel Abt for the Audi Sport Abt Formula E Team, are the only drivers to have confirmed rides for the 2014-2015 season.
FOX Sports 1 will have exclusive LIVE coverage of all 10 Formula E races during the inaugural season.
