Some years ago, at prior Barrett-Jackson auction, I witnessed a car sell at a world-record price. It was a nice car, but not a remarkable one or an especially rare one. There was nothing in the catalog description that tipped off readers that it would reach a stratospheric sales price, but it did.

Mopar muscle are red hot at the 43rd annual Collector Car Auction.

On Wednesday, a beautiful 1970 Dodge Challenger crossed the auction block at a hammer price of $92,000, which ranked it as the No. 4 top seller out of the 429 cars sold in the first two days. Not far behind in the No. 6 slot was a 1968 Plymouth Satellite custom convertible that fetched an eye-popping $80,000.

So today, when the quality of cars continues to build and prices continue to rise, we’ll be keeping a special eye out for Mopars.

An amateur Corvette L88 team beat the world’s best GT in this world record holding No. 57 “Rebel” L88 Corvette. The story about how this amazing Corvette became a world- beater begins with two Tampa, Fla., businessmen, Dave Heinz and Or Costanzo. Heinz owned Dave Heinz Imports, a Tampa dealership that sold new Jaguars. Costanzo was the new car sales manager for Ferman Chevrolet.

On weekends both shared a common passion — racing Corvettes. Zora Arkus-Duntov, the famous General Motors engineer turned high-performance department director, was always on the lookout for ways to support successful Corvette teams, including the Heinz and Costanzo Corvette. The fact that Costanzo worked at Ferman Chevrolet helped, giving him open communication to GM.

Tuesday was a sensational first night at the 43rd annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car auction, with a huge crowd and strong prices throughout. All told, 151 sold for a little more than $4 million and attendance was up 25 percent over 2013.

The top seller was the 2013 Mothers Ford Mustang RTR Spec 3, a 650-horsepower custom that raised $110,000 for the TGen Foundation. And a 1969 Ford Torino Talladega hammered at a healthy $100,000.

Wednesday, the cars get a little nicer and the prices should rise accordingly.
