Rolex 24: IMSA To Enforce ‘Anti-Sandbagging’ Rule During Competition

Teams competing in this weekend’s season-opening at Daytona could be in for a late-race surprise, should they be deemed to have not shown their full hand in the run-up to the around-the-clock endurance classic.

IMSA has put into place a new rule that effectively penalizes a team or manufacturer that is found to be sandbagging, with a minimum stop-and-hold plus five-minute in-race penalty for anyone displaying a level of performance beyond the expected result.

Alex Gurney will go down in the history books as being the first pole-sitter for the , having peddled his GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing Corvette DP to the top spot in qualifying for this weekend’s at Daytona.

The two-time GRAND-AM champion turned a best lap of 1:38.270 in the 15-minute Prototype class qualifying session, edging out the No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Corvette DP of Richard Westbrook by 0.217 seconds.

This weekend’s at Daytona marks a number of firsts, including the highly anticipated debut of Porsche’s all-new factory GT Le Mans team, as well the first outing of the German manufacturer’s 911 RSR “Evo” on U.S. soil.

Having completed a successful rollout in last year’s FIA WEC season-ending Six Hours of Bahrain, the newest evolution 911 is now set to take on the as part of the factory two-car CORE autosport-run effort.

The new 911 RSR features a number of updates over the 2013 Le Mans class-winning model, including a revised front bumper and radiator placement, a 1 inch wider rim on the rear axle and a 85mm wider rear wing, the latter two thanks to waivers from the ACO.

After making his mark in touring cars, Andy Priaulx is set to begin a new chapter in GT racing, as the three-time WTCC champion shifts to racing full-time in the this year.

The 40-year-old BMW factory driver, who is coming off a two-year stint in the German manufacturer’s DTM program, has joined BMW Team RLL, teaming with Bill Auberlen in the No. 55 BMW Z4 GTE for the entire 11-round championship.

It all begins with this weekend’s at Daytona, where the accomplished Brit will be chasing top honors in the GT Le Mans class.

It’s a dawn of a new era for sports car racing, as the kicks off this weekend on the famed Florida high banks for the 52nd annual Rolex 24 at Daytona.
