Alonso honorary starter for 24 Hours of Le Mans; McNish Grand Marshal

and Fernando Alonso will be among the dignitaries that will be honored in this year’s , the Automobile Club de l’Ouest announced Monday.

McNish, a three-time race winner and reigning FIA World Endurance champion, will serve as Grand Marshal for the 82nd running of the event, while two-time Formula One World Champion and Ferrari factory driver Alonso has been named the race starter.

Following months of speculation and intrigue, Nissan officially announced Friday its entry into the LMP1 class for 2015, which will see a two-car full factory program in the FIA World Endurance Championship with the legendary GT-R model.

The Japanese manufacturer’s all-new prototype, the Nissan GT-R LM NISMO, will take on the likes of Audi, Toyota and Porsche in what will be a global effort encompassing technical resources and facilities in Japan, Europe and the U.S.

Le Mans Entry List: Lotus Withdraws, Millennium Racing Rejoins Field

There’s been a further change to the entry list for next month’s 24 Hours of Le Mans, as the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) announced Tuesday the withdrawal of Lotus, which was set to compete in the new-for-2014 LMP1-L class.

The Kodewa-run effort, which had faced delays with the build of the new Lotus T129 AER, has given way for Millennium Racing to rejoin the field. The UAE-backed effort, run by Britain’s Delta Motorsport, was originally forced out of the race due to delays in their funding.

Prototype Challenge competitors will be in for a unique two-segment race in next month’s round at Kansas Speedway.

IMSA confirmed Friday the format of the combined PC and Cooper Tires Prototype Lites event, which will see a pair of aggregate 45-minute sprint races on the 2.37-mile oval/road course.

Toyota earned back-to-back FIA World Endurance Championship victories with a commanding win in Saturday’s Six Hours of Spa-Francorchamps.

Nicolas Lapierre took the No. 8 Toyota TS040 Hybrid to a 1 minute and 13-second victory over Loic Duval’s No. 1 Audi R18 e-tron quattro, in a race that saw an early challenge from Porsche until both of the 919 Hybrids ran into trouble.
