Sports Cars: Rossi Joins DeltaWing For Rolex 24

GP2 race winner Alexander Rossi will make his Rolex 24 at Daytona debut, having been named Friday as the third driver in the DeltaWing for the season-opener.

The 22-year-old California native, who serves as Caterham’s Formula 1 reserve driver, will join Andy Meyrick and Katherine Legge in the closed-top car.

5. Launch of Asian Le Mans Series: After numerous attempts, the Asian Le Mans Series finally kicked off in 2013, featuring a modest four-round schedule. OAK Racing Team Total and driver David Cheng walked as champions in LMP2, while AF Corse picked up GTC class honors. Despite having started with only eight entries, the car count nearly doubled by the season finale, giving optimism towards an even larger field in 2014.

5. Mike Conway: Making his sports car racing debut, Mike Conway proved to be one of the storylines of 2013. The Englishman scored a season-high four LMP2 class victories in the final five rounds of the FIA World Endurance Championship with G-Drive Racing by Delta-ADR and co-drivers John Martin and Roman Rusinov, while also shining in his one-and-only ALMS start with Level 5 Motorsports. An exclusion at Le Mans for an illegal fuel cell ultimately denied the 30-year-old the FIA WEC LMP2 title. Conway’s talent was quickly noticed by Toyota, which has brought him on board to be its test and reserve driver for next year in LMP1.

5. Rolex Series Kansas: GRAND-AM’s first, and only, trip to the high-banked oval surprisingly produced one of the most entertaining races of the year, with close battles in both the Daytona Prototype and GT classes. Jordan Taylor held off Scott Pruett for more than 45 minutes to take victory, in what could be considered a career-defining drive by the 22-year-old second generation racer.

5. Ferrari Goes up in Flames: An apparent fuel leak for the No. 71 AF Corse Ferrari 458 Italia of Toni Vilander in the FIA WEC Six Hours of Sao Paulo saw the flying Finn making a quick exit from his burning Prancing Horse. Miraculously, the car was rebuilt in time for the next race.
