Former Formula One test driver Maria de Villota was found dead in a hotel room in Seville on Friday, and police said it appears she died of natural causes. She was 33.

Spanish police told The Associated Press that De Villota was discovered in the Hotel Sevilla Congresos in the morning, dead “apparently from natural causes.” An autopsy will be carried out.

De Villota was seriously injured last year in a crash during testing for the F1 team in England, losing her right eye and sustaining serious head injuries that kept her hospitalized for a month.

Sebastian Vettel had the fastest time in the second practice for the Japanese Grand Prix on Friday, indicating the German is in good position to clinch his fourth Formula One championship this weekend.

Vettel was 0.168 seconds faster than Red Bull teammate around the circuit. Mercedes driver was two-tenths of a second off Vettel’s time.

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton had the fastest lap in Friday’s opening practice session for the Japanese Formula One Grand Prix, edging teammate and championship leader .

Hamilton’s time of 1 minute, 34.157 seconds around the circuit was just 0.330 seconds faster than Rosberg. Vettel was six tenths of a second off Hamilton’s time.

The calculations are simple for Sebastien Vettel as he chases victory in the Japanese Grand Prix to secure a fourth straight Formula One championship.

If Vettel wins at on Sunday, and his nearest rival finishes worse than eighth, the German driver will join his compatriot Michael Schumacher and Argentine Juan-Manuel Fangio as the only men to win four consecutive titles. And if he does it in Japan, where he has won three of the last four GP races, he’ll be the youngest in the exclusive list to achieve four straight titles.

Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti will need a second surgery on the broken right ankle he suffered when his car went airborne into the fence during the last lap of the Grand Prix of Houston.

Franchitti also fractured two vertebrae in his spine and received a concussion. He had surgery on the ankle Sunday night and remained in the hospital afterward. Franchitti is expected to return to Indianapolis on Wednesday and have a second surgery on his ankle.
