MotoGP: Lorenzo Takes Crucial Motegi Pole, Marquez Second

Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo of Spain claimed pole position for the Japanese on Saturday, putting himself in place to challenge championship leader and compatriot in Sunday’s race.

Lorenzo was 0.658 seconds faster than Marquez in a single 75-minute qualifying session which was cut short because of rain at the Twin Ring Motegi track north of Tokyo.

Sebastian Vettel will start from pole position at the Indian Grand Prix, shoring up the Red Bull driver’s bid for an almost inevitable fourth straight Formula One title.

Vettel only needs to finish fifth or better Sunday to wrap up the championship with three races remaining, and bettered his own lap record to claim his third straight pole at Buddh International Circuit. The German has won both previous races, leading every lap.

He clocked 1 minute, 24.119 seconds to beat his nearest rival by 0.7 seconds.

Formula One driver Pastor Maldonado denied any involvement in a currency exchange scandal that has implicated motorsports athletes from his native Venezuela.

Speaking ahead of the Indian Grand Prix on Friday, Maldonado said he supports his government’s investigations and is “really looking forward to getting some news on this.”

Sebastian Vettel drove 35 flawless laps in the second practice session Friday to edge Red Bull teammate for the quickest time ahead of Sunday’s Indian Grand Prix.

Vettel recorded 1 minute, 25.722 seconds on soft tires for his best lap on the Buddh International Circuit, .289 faster than Webber and almost a second quicker than his time of 1:26.683 in the first session.

Vettel, who has won both previous races from pole, can win his fourth straight world title by placing fifth or better on Sunday.

Jorge Lorenzo strengthened his defense of the title by winning the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday when championship leader Marc Marquez was dramatically disqualified for delaying a compulsory pit stop.

Yamaha’s Lorenzo, starting from pole, won a race shortened to 19 laps by 6.9 seconds from Honda’s and veteran .

Marquez, 20, bidding to become the youngest ever Moto GP champion, was disqualified five laps from the finish after staying on the track one lap longer than allowed before taking a pit stop. He took no points from the race, allowing Lorenzo to close his lead in the championship standings to 18 points with two rounds remaining.
