F1: Schumacher Shows Small Improvement After Second Surgery — Update

underwent a second surgery after a brain scan showed small, “surprising” signs of improvement, but grim doctors said Tuesday they could offer no insight into the prognosis for the champion.

Schumacher, who turns 45 on Friday, suffered critical head injuries when he fell and struck a rock Sunday while skiing on a family vacation in the French Alps. His manager confirmed that the accident cracked his helmet, which doctors credited for giving him a chance at survival.

Schumacher’s condition stabilized somewhat after the second surgery, but he remains in a medically induced coma — and doctors gave no prediction on how long that would last.

Granatelli, Indy 500-Winning Car Owner, Dies At 90

Andy Granatelli, the former CEO of STP motor oil company who made a mark on motorsports as a car owner, innovator and entrepreneur, has died. He was 90.

Granatelli’s son, Vince, said his father died Sunday of congestive heart failure at a Santa Barbara hospital.

UPDATE — 5:30 p.m. ET — Schumacher In Critical Condition

Seven-time champion Michael Schumacher was hospitalized with a head injury Sunday after a skiing accident in the French Alps, French authorities and his manager said.

The French Mountain Gendarmerie said Schumacher was wearing a helmet when he had a hard fall at the Meribel resort and that he sustained a “relatively serious” head injury.

A new, environmentally friendly auto racing series just got even greener.

Boston Celtics managing partner Wyc Grousbeck and a dozen of his co-owners in the franchise have invested $21 million into Formula E, an all-electric circuit that has already attracted celebrities with environmental interests such as actor Leonardo DiCaprio and billionaire Richard Branson. The series is scheduled to debut in Beijing in September and continue on the streets from Miami to Monaco in a 10-race, Formula One-style championship.

That’s when it all hit home for Tony Kanaan, Chip Ganassi’s employees — and Franchitti himself.

He is done racing.
