World Champion Sebastien Ogier won three of five stages Friday to take the lead in the season-opening Monte Carlo Rally, while had to retire after skidding off the road on the second day of the race.

Ogier led fellow Frenchman by 51.1 seconds. of Britain slipped to third, 1 minute, 38 seconds off the lead. Mads Ostberg of Norway and Jari-Matti Latvala of Finland rounded out the top five.

Carlos Sainz of Spain won the seventh stage of the Dakar Rally on Sunday, while countryman maintained a large lead in the overall standings for cars.

The car division drove a 500-kilometer loop near Salta, Argentina, and Sainz took advantage of a speedy special suited to his buggy to lead for the entire day and win his second stage of the race and 27th in his Dakar history.

Three deaths overshadowed Friday’s sixth leg of the Dakar Rally, as the race claimed the life of Belgian motorcyclist and two spectators who were following the event.

Palante’s body was found after he failed to finish Thursday’s fifth stage.

Two people following the Dakar Rally died when their vehicle overturned in rough terrain in northern Argentina.

Police identified the pair on Friday as Agustin Ignacio Mina, 19, and Daniel Eduardo Ambrosio, 51.

Police said the crash took place on Thursday at the end of the fifth stage. Police said Mina was covering the rally for a motor racing magazine, and they identified Ambrosio as a fan of motor sports.
