Gerard Lopez took over as the team principal of Lotus on Friday as a replacement for Eric Boullier, fueling widespread media reports that the Frenchman is on the move to rival McLaren.

Lopez will combine his new role with his previous position of co-chairman at Lotus, which had a strong season on the track last year despite financial problems off it.

Juan Pablo Montoya is returning to racing and at age 38 is determined to prove he can still be a force in open-wheeler racing.

The 2000 Indianapolis 500 champion and ex- driver has joined a new but formidable team, and he’s spent most of the offseason getting acclimated to his new surroundings.

“I do feel like a rookie,” Montoya said this week after IndyCar drivers were given their annual physicals in Indianapolis. “It’s hard to know how well up to speed I am, because I’ve been running by myself.”

World Champion Sebastien Ogier of France protected his overnight lead to win the season-opening in treacherous conditions on Saturday.

Ogier won three of the five stages on Friday to climb from fourth and take the overnight lead, and extended it as the weather conditions became progressively worse, with first snow then heavy rain and fog making it particularly difficult for the drivers in the two night sessions.

Nani Roma won the Dakar Rally after an anticlimactic 13th and final stage during which team orders guaranteed the Spaniard would finish first on Saturday.

, the Dakar’s record 11-time winner and defending champion, began the race’s shortest stage of 157 kilometers with a 26-seconds lead but the Frenchman slowed down and even stopped to let teammate Roma roll first to Valparaiso.

The statement from manager Sabine Kehm does not mention the word “critical” for the first time in describing the condition of the seven-time world champion.
