A quick search around the Internet finds a swath of sites devoted to the pork product – and it’s not just about traditional recipes anymore.
Apparently, the more bizarre the final product sounds, the more bacon aficionados are hungering to try to throw a little more meat into their diet.
Which brings one to Texas Motor Speedway and fan-savvy Eddie Gossage.
The speedway’s president worked with the tracks’ chef to come up with a recipe for – are you ready – bacon-flavored cotton candy. It will debut at the track during the April Sprint Cup race weekend. But it debuted on the NASCAR Sprint Media Tour hosted by Charlotte Motor Speedway on Tuesday afternoon.
Suddenly, there it was. A pink floss with bacon bits attached all over it. A flying pink pig floating across the wrapper of the “Hawg Heaven Bacon Cotton Candy” type – a tempting mixture of sugar and meat. What more could one ask for when taking in fast cars with friends and family?
It’s one of a series of unusual dishes appearing at Speedway Motorsports Inc. tracks this season, including pit stop popcorn and smokin’ hub caps at Texas; Coke zero braised beef tips at Atlanta, house fries (smothered in gravy and topped with, among other things, jalapenos) at Las Vegas, the Bristol brat that includes dried cherries and Tennessee whiskey in the recipe at Bristol; lobster mac and cheese at New Hampshire, country fried white wine slaw dogs a Sonoma, a deep-fried bourbon ball at Kentucky and jalapeno and – yep – bacon hushpuppies at Charlotte.
Bacon as a desert, thought, certainly ranks among the tops in originality.
So how is it? Imagine melt-in-your mouth bacon flavor capped with a little crunch from the bacon bits. At first, it’s hard to figure out the bacon part of the cotton candy, because of the nature of the desert. But for those caught up in the recent baconmania, trying this should be a must.
