Stoops announces suspension of Johnson for opener

As originally reported last week, by FOXSportsSouthwest.com, defensive back Cortez Johnson will not play Saturday against Louisana-Monroe – Oklahoma’s opening game.

Johnson is being disciplined for a violation of team rules. Coach Bob Stoops announced the punishment Monday, adding defensive tackle Chuka Ndulue will also miss the game. Ndulue was arrested in July on a DUI complaint.

The loss of Johnson, a transfer from Arizona, will leave the Sooners without one of their starting cornerbacks. Aaron Colvin will start at the other. Zack Sanchez will likely get the start Saturday. Ndulue’s absence could mean immediate playing time for junior college transfer Quincy Russell. Russell was just cleared to practice last week.

The suspensions are expected to be for just one game, but Stoops did not confirm that.
