Source: Mavericks contact free agent Monta Ellis

The Mavericks have contacted free-agent point guard Monta Ellis according to sources.

The Dallas Mavericks have contacted point guard Monta Ellis during the first day of free agency Monday, sources have told FOX Sports Southwest.

Ellis, 27, signed a six-year, $66 million contact with the Golden State Warriors in 2008 and was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks last season where he averaged 19.2 points, 3.9 rebounds and six assists.

Ellis opted out of the final year his six-year deal, thus making one of the league’s top shooting guards a free agent.

The Mavericks have the cap space to sign Ellis and the star point guard has expressed interest in joining the team.

Dallas hopes to acquire a veteran starting point guard allowing draft picks Shane Larkin and Gal Mekel, who signed a three-year, minimum-salary deal, to compete for backup minutes this season.
