Knicks president Phil Jackson spoke with his former player on the phone Wednesday and talks between the two will continue next week, according to Yahoo Sports citing league sources.
Fisher won five NBA championships as a player under Jackson during their years with the Los Angeles Lakers.
According to the report, the 39-year-old is "leaning strongly" toward retiring from his playing career and is "expected to move forward with more substantive talks" with the Knicks.
Fisher's 18th season in the NBA ended in the Western Conference finals with the Oklahoma City Thunder's six-game loss to the San Antonio Spurs. Jackson was fined $25,000 by the league for tampering with Fisher while the Thunder were still playing.
Jackson's first choice for head coach, Steve Kerr, accepted the Golden State Warriors job over the Knicks.
