Despite Derek Fisher still playing for the Oklahoma City Thunder as they try to make their way back to the NBA Finals, reports say the 18-year veteran is the "favorite to land the Knicks head coaching job at this point."
New York Knicks team president Phil Jackson is reportedly more than okay with Fisher’s lack of coaching experience, saying last month he is looking for someone who can be a leader, something he has already proved during his long playing career.
"We’re looking for a leader," Jackson said last month according to ESPN. "Someone who can bring out the best in players, someone who has the capability of encouraging the staff to meet the needs that players have, that philosophically join in, they buy into what we’re doing."
While plans can change quickly in coaching searches (not long ago the Knicks were close to hiring Steve Kerr) Fisher should have an advantage on the competition due to the relationship built with Jackson during the duo’s time together with the Los Angeles Lakers.
