The Texas Rangers acquired left-hander Tommy Hottovy for Kansas City for a player to be named later and cash considerations.
Hottovy was added to the 40-man roster, giving the Rangers 35 players on the roster. The addition of Hottovy gives the Rangers five lefties on their 40-man roster.
Hottovy, 31, spent the majority of the 2012 season pitching in Triple A, where he went 2-2 with a 2.52 ERA and seven saves. Left-handers hit just .147 off him in the minors. He made nine appearances for the Royals, posting a 2.89 ERA in 9 2 1/3 innings.
He also pitched in eight games for Boston in 2011. He was a fourth-round pick by the Red Sox in 2004.
