Rangers rookie Odor receives praise after big night

HOUSTON - One night after Rougned Odor got his first-career RBI and hit first-career home run, Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington had nothing but praise for his 20-year-old second baseman.
"He's got a lot of upside," Washington said. "Can't help but to continue to get better. Once he starts to figure out what the league is doing to him, he's the kind of kid that can be able to make the adjustments."
Washington is sure Odor, who is hitting .250 entering Tuesday's game against the Astros, isn't one to shy away from obstacles that he may face in the majors at a young age.
"He's not at all afraid, he believes in his abilities whether things good or things go bad. He don't get down on himself," Washington said. "You can tell he has some baseball IQ."
Going along with his big night at the plate, Odor had an odd incident in the sixth inning of Monday's game that drew a lot of attention with a ball going into his buttoned jersey while attempting to field a grounder.
"You know, when that ball jumped; I actually thought the way he jumped, it hit him in his chest and went into his glove," Washington said. "When he stood up and then went to go into his shirt, I just couldn't believe it."
While the play made for a good laugh, it did allow Astros' hitter Matt Dominguez to reach first base and extend the inning.
"My thought was, 'what else could happen to us?' because [Lewis] was off the field. Might have got him past the sixth and into the seventh," Washington said. "It was a freak thing, all the years I've been in the game I think that's only the second time I've seen that happen."
The Rangers managed to end the inning without allowing any runs to score, but Washington is hoping to get Odor a different size jersey to avoid another 'wardrobe malfunction.'
"He came down the steps there and Hoggy (Rangers Equipment Manager) was there, and I just said, 'Hoggy can't you get this kid a smaller jersey to wear?'" Washington said with a grin.
